China's Boost in CO2 emissions [blog]

OK, so this reconjured up thoughts over the use of "per capita" as a measure for comparison between countries. I don't know if that is valid for CO2 emissions - I mean, how does population density actually increase? Do people tend to live together more, which is better than single-person apartments/houses and/or does clumping in cities mean that there is pollution production skyrockets in city areas? What I mean is, is the relationship between population size and CO2 emissions actually linear over the range which is used to compare different countries? I don't know and also then is it about reducing CO2 emissions per capita or about reducing capita? Because then the measure would change...
