Should Party Pills Be Banned? [article comments]

No, I'm not going to talk about how it'll "push" people onto harder drugs, or give people up till December to "stock up" or open a whole new black market asset. People make decisions and if people make decisions in ways that aren't socially acceptable, then something is wrong with the society. Oh, thanks to MB I now remember they're BZP drugs. :)

Anyway, it made me think about banning in general. I have heard in the past that our judicial system is based on honesty. Sure, I guess we rely on people to tell the truth and for the jury to be honest with their opinions and decisions and the judge to be honest...blah blah. But I just wonder - does the existence of rules and a justice system in itself not imply that we assume people are bad? If we assumed people were good, then we wouldn't need rules to tell people not to murder or rape.

But in saying that, I guess everything is not black and white. Perhaps the system assumes people are innately good and only serves as a guide for behaviour. So if laws and judicial systems are not working 100% to prevent socially-inacceptable behaviour (crime), then the system is flawed and/or we need better guides. Once again, it boils down to the whole society, all the communities and individuals of New Zealand (and perhaps the world) to re-evaluate their core values and think about what they want to see for the future. How often do you think about that? And if the answer to that is every waking moment, then won't you join me in this insomnious state?
