What was Finding Nemo all about? Between the themes of parenting, friendship, courage and loyalty, what other message might exist? What are humans doing to our environment and what are we doing to the other creatures that share this planet with us? By humanising fish, are the writers at Pixar trying to tell us something about ourselves? Even fish, who have supposed low-level intelligence and very basic functions, can muster understanding of complex relationships in parenthood and friendship in a backdrop of human activity or trauma above the natural stresses of being prey.

No, I'm not condemning fishing or scuba diving, but what is your purpose of doing it? Eating to survive, swimming to learn...capturing for entertainment or poorly-thought out gift to an irresponsible young child? And what of their homes - the coral reef or rainforest or little nest in your backyard?

An exhibit at the Aquarium of the Pacific shows clownfish and other fish that live in tropical reefs. 'Nemo' is an orange clownfish (Amphiprion percula) living in sea anemones (Heteractis magnifica). Did you know that clownfish live in small groups, with one mating male, one mating female and a few smaller non-mating males. When the female passes away, the mating male changes sex to become a female in what is called sequential hermaphroditism.

Another exhibit shows broken staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) - why are they all broken? Are they waiting for them to regrow by attaching to the substrate they've given them? How long have they been here like this? I don't know. Would the children know? Would they even know this is broken and presumably dead?... read the rest at Cherrieland
